Bigger feels excluded from possibilities because of his race. One example of this is when he and Gus see a plane flying overhead and Bigger imagines himself in the plane, “’I could fly a plane if I had a chance’”. Bigger has all the confidence in the world, but he does not have the opportunity to try. In that same dialogue, Gus vocalizes the reason of why Bigger cannot pursue such an idea, “’If you wasn’t black….’”. Even Gus recognizes the reason Bigger cannot be free to try such things as flying, is because of his race.

Bigger feels excluded from possibily because the white oppression is present at this time and basically the white people tell the African Americans that they are not permitted to do anything great in society. Bigger is actually thinking like the oppressors and Bigger also oppresses himself because he thinks like the white people because he thinks to himself that the white people said i can’t do something great with my life, so i guess i can not do this certain goal.

Another person that holds Bigger back in the novel is his mother. HIs mother keeps begging him to step up to the plate and just get a job to support his familly. She does not keep in mind that Bigger has dreams and wants to make something great out of his life.
In the book, Bigger feels excluded for being African American. The white oppression makes him feel as though he cannot amount to anything. “If you wasn’t black and if you had some money and if they’d let you go to that aviation school, you could fly a plane.” The oppression keeps him at a level that he cannot overcome, and he ultimately denies himself the opportunity to be a successful person. “Half the time I feel like I’m ion the outside of the world peeping in though a knot-hole in the fence”. Bigger feels as though African American and Whites are different in standards, and this is where his mind stays.

Bigger feels excluded from possibility because of his race; but, the thing that is really excluding him from opportunity is the white oppression that looms over him. The quote I used before from Gus can illustrate my point, “’If you wasn’t black….’”. When Gus is saying these words to bring Bigger back down from his fantasy high, Gus is almost saying “only if you were white could you do that”. In saying what Gus said, he is implying that he believes Bigger could truly fly, but there is just one restriction put on him, and that is the fact that Bigger is not white. Bigger’s hopes and dreams fly higher than even the planes he sees in the sky, but he has not the opportunity to prove himself because he is oppressed. Like Ruben said, Bigger feels as though he is on a different level than the whites. He feels this way because the whites oppress him and degrade him.

I think the reason why Bigger feels excluded from possibility is because of his race. Bigger makes it evident many times in this piece that he could be exposed to many opportunities if he was not black. This is best shown when Bigger and Gus see an airplane an began discussing there possibilities of being in the position of being a pilot. “If you wasn’t black and if you had some money and if they’d let you go to that aviation school, you could fly a plane.” This quotes shows that in society possibilities are depended solely on race. Bigger also tells the reader of what race is exposed to the most possibilities. Once bigger sees the airplane, he can already suspect who was the pilot. “Them whit boys sure can fly.”Gus said.
“Yeah,” Bigger said, wistfully. “They get a chance to do everything.”
Bigger shows that he can already suspect that there was a white man flying the plane because of their race. He is also able to show the reader the exclusion of possibility that he and the rest of his race has.
Bigger could also feel excluded from possibility because he doesn’t have support and inspiration. The piece shows that Bigger is constantly being degraded by his family. His mother degrades his because since their father died she needed him to be the father figure and the source of income. However because he’s still young, he doesn’t make the things that his mother wants him to do a priority. Instead he acts like an average twenty year old. As a result of this, his mother belittles constantly asking him “When are you going to get a job.” Bigger is also belittles by his sister, as his mother and sister gang up on him.”I don’t want you to forget, son”
“And you know how you can gorget,” Vera said
By this, it is a clear alliance made in there house and as they continuously degrade bigger, It gives him no inspiration for possibilities.
